The legend of Laura is the most famous ghost story associated with the historic Tilton Inn (formerly known as the 1875 Inn) in Tilton, New Hampshire.
The Story of Laura
- The Tragedy: According to local lore, Laura was a 12-year-old girl who lived at the inn over a century ago. She tragically died in a fire that broke out at the property in the 1800s. The inn has survived three major fires in its history (1875, 1903, and 1921), and Laura is believed to be a victim of one of these blazes.
- The Haunting: Laura is described as a gentle and non-threatening spirit. Guests and staff have reported seeing her apparition wandering the hallways and guest rooms.
- The Sanborn Room: While her presence is felt throughout the building, she is most frequently associated with the Sanborn Room.
Paranormal Activity at the Inn
Beyond sightings of Laura, guests often report other unexplained phenomena:
- Physical Manifestations: Moving objects, cold spots, and light fixtures that turn on and off by themselves.
- Auditory Experiences: The sound of giggling children, disembodied footsteps, and mysterious knocks.
- Other Spirits: Some reports mention “shadow people” or another friendly spirit named Charlie, though Laura remains the primary figure of the inn’s lore.
The Tilton Inn has been featured on the television show “Ghost Hunters” (Season 6, Episode 17: “Uninvited Guests”) and is included in numerous books about New England’s most haunted locations.
