The North Shore Monster

The North Shore Monster is a legendary cryptid said to inhabit the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

The 1877 Legend

The most famous account occurred on July 8, 1877, near Monument Point on the lake’s northern shore.

  • The Encounter: J.H. McNeil and several workers at the Barnes and Co. saltworks reported seeing a massive creature emerging from the water at dusk.
  • Description: They described the beast as roughly 75 feet long with a crocodile-like body and the head of a horse.
  • Behavior: The creature reportedly let out a “fearsome bellowing noise” and charged toward the men, who fled into the nearby mountains and hid until morning.
  • Aftermath: The following day, workers claimed to have found large overturned boulders and disturbed ground along the shoreline.

Skepticism and Explanations

Many experts and skeptics suggest these sightings are the result of misidentified natural phenomena:

  • Wildlife: Some suggest the 1877 “monster” may have been a swimming buffalo, though this does not account for the reported 75-foot length. Others point to large carp or otters.
  • Environmental Factors: The lake’s high salinity can create mirage-like optical effects, making common objects or animals appear much larger.
