Haunting of RMS Queen Mary

The RMS Queen Mary, permanently docked in Long Beach, California, is widely considered one of the most haunted locations in the world, with as many as 150 spirits reportedly haunting its decks. Since retiring in 1967, the ship has documented over 50 deaths on board, fueling its reputation as a paranormal hotspot.

Most Notorious Haunted Hotspots

  • Stateroom B340: Reopened for guests in September 2024 after being sealed for decades due to extreme activity. Guests report blankets being ripped off beds, faucets turning on by themselves, and a shadowy man standing at the foot of the bed.
  • The Engine Room (Door 13): The site where 18-year-old crew member John Pedder was crushed to death during a drill in 1966. His ghost, often seen in blue overalls, is said to haunt the area near the watertight door.
  • First-Class Swimming Pool: Visitors frequently report hearing the laughter and splashing of “Little Jackie,” a young girl who allegedly drowned there. Others have seen a woman in 1930s-style swimwear appearing near the now-drained pool.
  • The Queen’s Salon: Home to the “Lady in White,” a spirit often seen dancing alone to silent music in the shadows of the former first-class lounge.

Paranormal Tours & Experiences

The Queen Mary Official Site offers several daily and seasonal ways to explore its haunting history:

  • Haunted Encounters Tour: A 1-hour non-scary introduction to the ship’s most famous ghost stories.
  • Paranormal Ship Walk: A 2-hour after-hours exploration of restricted, hidden compartments.
  • Graveyard Tours: A late-night, 2-hour tour (Friday and Saturday) exploring the ship’s most notorious specters for guests 16+.
  • Grey Ghost Project: A 2-hour paranormal investigation where guests use equipment like EMF detectors to hunt for evidence.
  • Dark Harbor: A massive annual Halloween festival featuring mazes, live monsters, and immersive haunted attractions on and around the ship.

Recent Developments (2025–2026)

In late 2025, the ship opened Jackie’s Spirit Shoppe, a paranormal-themed boutique in the former third-class dining lounge. A new Full Moon program is also scheduled to debut in 2026, offering further nighttime spiritual experiences. Recent visitor reports from late 2025 continue to claim sightings of strange “orbs” and phantom figures in the hallways near B340.
