North Carolina’s early history dates back to the late 1500s when English explorers attempted to establish one of the first colonies in North America. The mysterious disappearance of settlers at Roanoke Colony gave the area the nickname “The Lost Colony,” a story that still fascinates historians and visitors today.

The region later became part of the Province of Carolina under British rule before eventually splitting into North and South Carolina in 1712. During the American Revolution, North Carolina played a critical role in the fight for independence, contributing soldiers, resources, and strategic support. The state officially joined the United States as the 12th state on November 21, 1789.

North Carolina has played an important role in several defining moments in American history.
