The Rio Grande Depot in Salt Lake City is widely considered one of Utah’s most haunted locations. While the original Rio Grande Cafe relocated to a new building in 2022 due to earthquake damage at the depot, the legend of its hauntings remains tied to the historic train station.
The Legend of the Purple Lady
The most famous spirit is The Purple Lady, an apparition said to haunt the building for over 80 years.
- The Story: According to local legend, a young woman met her fiancé at the station in the 1940s. After a heated argument, he threw her engagement ring onto the tracks. She jumped down to retrieve it and was struck and killed by an oncoming train.
- Sightings: She is typically described as a beautiful woman with long black hair wearing a flowing purple dress. Her spirit is most frequently reported in the women’s restroom (where she is heard singing a somber tune) and the hallway leading to the area where the cafe was formerly located.
Other Paranormal Activity
Beyond the Purple Lady, visitors and staff have reported several other eerie occurrences:
- Shadow Figures: A shadowy male figure, often believed to be a former stationmaster, has been seen in the lobby and on the balcony.
- Auditory Phenomena: Security guards and workers have reported heavy breathing and disembodied footsteps that echo through the quiet building at night.
- Poltergeist Activity: Lights frequently flicker or turn on and off in locked rooms, and bathroom faucets have been known to turn on by themselves.
- Elevator Cold Spots: Sudden, unexplained drops in temperature are often reported in the building’s elevator.
Current Status as of 2026
As of early 2026, the Rio Grande Depot remains under renovation following the 2020 Magna earthquake. The Rio Grande Cafe now operates at 258 S 1300 E, inside a renovated old firehouse, though customers still frequently reference the “semi-ghost tour experience” of its former home.
