The Spiteful Mermaid of Pyramid Lake

The Spiteful Mermaid of Pyramid Lake is a modern urban legend and folklore figure associated with Pyramid Lake in Nevada. While often confused or combined with the older indigenous legend of the “Water Babies,” the mermaid story specifically centers on a tale of forbidden love and a subsequent deadly curse.

The Legend of the Mermaid

According to the popular narrative, a Paiute warrior once fell in love with a beautiful mermaid. When he brought her back to his village to marry her, the tribe rejected the union and ordered him to return her to the water. Enraged and heartbroken by this rejection, the mermaid placed a powerful curse on the lake and the people who frequent it.

  • The Curse: Locals and believers attribute various misfortunes to her spite, including the 1860 Pyramid Lake War and “bad luck” for the tribe.
  • The Drownings: The mermaid is often blamed for the lake’s mysterious drownings and the fact that bodies of victims sometimes disappear entirely or allegedly resurface 60 miles away in Lake Tahoe.
  • Presence: Witnesses often report a “dark presence” near the water or sudden, violent turbulence on the lake’s surface that subsides as quickly as it began.

Connection to “Water Babies”

The “Spiteful Mermaid” is frequently mentioned alongside the more ancient legend of Water Babies (paúngaa’a). These are separate entities in Paiute and Shoshone lore, often described as powerful, non-human spirits that mimic the cries of infants to lure people into the depths.
